For 2012, Philadelphia Sculling Club will offer two 5-day Learn To Row programs: July 2-6 and July 16 - 20, at the Hines Rowing Center in Conshohocken, PA.
The Philadelphia Sculling Club was founded as a summer development program for high-performing high school boys, but offers a Learn-to-Row camp for boys or girls with no rowing experience. In 2010, PSC won a National Championship in the Boys Quad over the summer, and its coaches and athletes bring the same level of dedication to teaching new rowers!
This is one of the only camps that introduces new rowers to both sweeping (one oar per person) AND sculling (two oars per person), and utilizes both stable single-person training shells and multi-person "barges" for learning technique and boat movement. Campers will also get a solid introduction to rowing terminology, boat types and sizes, and what rowing for their high school might be like. Coaches include championship high school coaches and accomplished college athletes, and campers will have a chance to meet and interact with PSC's athletes who are training for national and international success over the summer as well.
Campers will receive a PSC t-shirt at the end of the week; parents can come on Friday afternoon to see how much their sons and daughters have accomplished over the week!
Camp 1, the week of July 2-6 is geared more towards rowers with NO rowing experience, though those with SOME experience are welcome with the permission of the director.
Camp 2, the week of July 16-20, is geared more towards those with SOME experience, but those with NO experience are welcome. Please contact the director if you have any questions about which might be more appropriate for your child.
Campers are welcome to register for BOTH weeks, with a $50 discount for those who do.
Camp will run from 11 - 3, Monday - Friday. A typical practice day might be as follows.
11 - 12 First practice on water
12 - 12:45 Lunch (campers should bring their own bag lunch)
12:45 - 1 Ergometer work, yoga or other workouts
1:15 - 1:30 Break
