The Philadelphia Sculling Club is the nation's premier summer junior sculling program. It was founded to provide a racing and training experience for boys that focused exclusively on sculling and in just two years has attracted the attention of competitors and coaches - both on the high school and college levels - from across the United States and Canada. PSC's programs currently exist primarily in the summer, though we occasionally have rowers race as PSC in other events in the fall.
Athetes typically come from both the Philadelphia region and around the country. More information about application standards can be found here; generally, accepted athletes will have significant sculling experience and a high level of fitness and technical proficiency before they start PSC. The program is designed, however, to take anyone from whatever level they may be when they arrive to new levels of personal achievement - levels they may have never thought they could reach.

Summer training gives you a chance to focus on rowing without the distractions of the school year and race multiple events at each regatta. Athletes learn to row better, but they also learn how to race better. Technique is hugely important, as is fitness, but the goal of the program is for athletes to finish the program being able to see their rowing experience as a whole- each stroke, practice, week, race, and season is a step towards improving themselves as a rower and as a person.
Athletes train in all sizes of boats - singles, doubles, and quads, and with different teammates throughout the summer. We focus, however, on the team boats and creating a team atmosphere. If you have raced in sculling boats but never a single, you will probably get the opportunity to do so. If you have been racing a single for years but never been in a truly fast big boat, PSC can be your chance.

The friendships that athletes make at PSC, whether it's with someone they were used to racing against every weekend or someone from the other side of the country they'd otherwise never meet, are a huge part of what makes the program worthwhile to many athletes. The small number of participants also means that while you are definitely a part of a team, everyone is a crucially important part. You get to know your teammates through training, travelling, and racing together, and the friendships from the summer last into college and beyond. It's not unsual to see PSC's distinctive white uniforms show up on the Schuylkill river through the summer and fall, and appear at college practices around the country. Alumni are fiercely proud of their participation, with good reason.

PSC's alumni are rowing at some of the best programs in the country, and college coaches are learning to watch for PSC athletes during the school year. Our successes have also come in the accomplishments of its athletes after they row with us (Stotesbury, regional, and national champions, IRA and Dad Vail medals, top-10 finishes in Speed Orders, just to name a few), and of course during our brief existence: 2010 National Champions, 2011 IDR Champions, and without question the fastest summer sculling results in the country.
"As focused as we are on racing, however, we understand that every race is part of a process, and not a series of results. Who we are at the end of the summer is the result."
